#033: The kombini! (Convenience Store)

Japan Fan Post #033
Many of you are probably wondering why I'm doing a post on convenience stores. They're practically everywhere and the same companies have locations spanning the earth. So, what does this have to do with Japan? Well, it's because Japan has some of the most advanced kombini (as they're called) in the world. Here's why.

1: Stores collect product data based on what different people buy and they have cashiers push buttons after every purchase corresponding to the customers age and gender. Below is a picture of those buttons. As you can see, the attendant selects a button based upon the customer's approximate age and gender.

2: Many stores are also adding additional services to make the stores live up to their name. A store called Lawson offers printing and copy services as well as ticket sales. The parent company of worldwide store 7-Eleven has installed ATMs marketed under the name "Seven Bank" in all of their Japanese stores. Seven Bank is one of the only ATMs in Japan that accepts foreign credit cards. Another store called Daily Yamazaki will let you buy large appliances from an electronic kiosk. Stores will also let you receive and send packages and they will even let you print out official documents that you would have to pick up at the town hall otherwise. So, they really are convenient!

3: Companies are creating stores that cater to certain people's needs. For example, the company Lawson created many offspring stores like "Happy Lawson" for parents. Happy Lawson in Yokohama has a large display of baby food and in another section, the store has a play area for little ones where parents can meet. "Natural Lawson" is an offspring devoted to natural and organic products. "Lawson Store 100" is a store devoted towards cheaper products that are in the 100-500 yen range (roughly 1-5 dollars).

A side note: I got the opportunity to travel with my dad on a business trip to China! Who knows, maybe this will turn into China Fan (JK, Japan is too awesome)

#032: Japanese Vending Machines (自動販売機)

Japan Fan Blog Post #032

Anyone who vaguely knows any city in Japan or who has been there knows that the Japan Machine Service (JMS) has found a way to stick a vending machine on every corner of every street in existence. While you may feel annoyed by these omnipresent advertisements, here are the top 5  reasons to love them!

1: Each machine can hold almost 30 different types of products!

Yes, it's insane. Just when you thought there were enough drinks on the street, picture this. One city block could contain about 90 different products; not even including restaurants and convenience stores!

2: They are some of the most advanced machinery in Japan!

The JMS has installed security devices on all of its machines that call the local police when it senses it is being tampered with. They also turn off heating and cooling between 1:00 and 6:00 AM to conserve energy! The white square and the black dot below are sensors and cameras.

3: They can sell both hot and cold drinks!

It is common tradition to buy a hot coffee from a vending machine during winter and keep warm by putting it in your pocket on your way to work. Yes, they have hot drinks too. On most machines, the cold selection will be blue and the warm selection will be red. Below, you can see the bottom row's drinks have red marks under them and the rest have blue. Those marks determine what temperature the drink is.

4: There are some odd products too!

If it's Japan, it's weird. Yes, and the vending machines are no exception. Ranging from bananas to warm ramen and  hot meals to toys, the vending machines in Japan are quite diverse. While the machine below may look like an ordinary drink machine, it actually dispenses heated ramen and oden (stew) cans.

5: They talk to you!

Some vending machines placed by Japan Railways (JR) in their stations are fully touchscreen and while nobody is buying anything, they play an animation.

AFTERWORD: I'm also trying to think about making the posts more like this.... gimme feedback.

#031: What's an "Eki-melo?"

Japan Fan Post #031

Well, "eki' or "駅" means "station," and if you take a guess that melo stands for melody, you've ended up with "station melody," or "駅メロ." So, what the heck is a "station melody?" A station melody is the short jingle invented by Japan Railways (or JR) to signal to their customers that a train will soon be leaving. However, these "eki-melos" aren't your average beeps and boops; these are real songs composed by the staff at JR. Here are a few!

Update!

So, I made it back from Japan, and since I'm moving, I have to drive down to my new home. However, this won't impact (or shouldn't) the post schedule.

Many people are probably wondering where the hell the rest of the Tokyo videos are. I haven't uploaded them yet because I'm not sure of the quality of the content. Upon returning from Hakone, we didn't do as much sightseeing and cultural stuff as we did re-visiting shops and such where we had seen things we wanted. But, nevertheless, I'm excited to put the new material up as one video as there is some cool stuff ,despite what I said earlier. Anyway, thanks for your patience and we will get back on track for Sunday!
